Getting Ready

LET’S WORK TOGETHER!

Step 1: To get started, please read the tips below carefully. If you have more general questions check out the FAQ page or Contact Me.

Step 2: Complete the “Book a Quilt” form

Step 3: Preparation

What size should my backing be?

Here’s an easy way to remember: Four-for-four! 🙂 I require the backing to be 4″ extra ON ALL SIDES. For example, if you have a quilt top that is 60″ x 80″, your backing should measure at least 68″ x 88″. It can be bigger, not smaller. Extra fees may apply if I need to put extra time and effort into getting your quilt ready to load. If you have questions, please ask.

Take a Victory Lap!

If your quilt has no borders and there are seams on the outer edges, I recommend you take a “victory lap” by sewing a basting stitch 1/8 inch from the outside. This keeps your seams from opening when the quilt is handled while being loaded on the longarm frame.

Tidy it Up!

Please press your top and backing for me so that it’s nice and tidy and ready for me to load. Please also clip stray threads or raveling fabrics as best as you can. You might not be able to get them all, but to prevent dark threads from shadowing through your quilt top, please don’t skip this important step!

Getting Your Quilt Top to Me

Once you’ve completed the steps above, you have two options to get your Quilt to me:

1. By Appointment: Clients within 50 miles of my location, 1482 Clark St, Central City KY 42330, should contact me to set up an appointment to meet or drop off quilt tops. I do work from my home and work very irregular hours (I am an extreme early-bird). Please do not drop by without an appointment. I prefer to control my schedule to allow the best use of my time. If you are within 150 miles and have multiple quilt tops I may be willing to travel.

2. Mail-in your quilt top: This is the option the majority of my customers use. I use PirateShip.com to return customer quilts. They offer discounted shipping rates for USPS and UPS. The service is free to use. You will need a printer to print a shipping label, or to paper that can be taped to the box.

a. Place a printout of your completed Book a Quilt request, your Quilt top, backing fabric and batting (if not purchasing through me) in a plastic bag that securely tie or taped to prevent possible moisture, then put it the box you plan to ship it in.

b. Ship the package to me at:

Broken Dishes Quilting Co
1482 Clark St,
Central City KY 42330

 C. Please send me a copy of the tracking information so I can keep an eye on when the quilt will be delivered.

The Quilting Process

I want this to be fun for you and not overwhelming! You have the option of having me make the quilting decisions for you. It all depends on your purpose for the quilt. Typically I will provide you with 3-5 digital pantograph patterns to review after getting your ideas. You are not limited to those choices, they are intended to help you narrow things down. Once a pattern is settled on we will choose a thread color.

When your project is complete I will provide an invoice that will include the price of return shipping with $300 of additional insurance. Once your invoice is paid in full I will return all of your extra fabric and batting unless you prefer otherwise. It will be sealed in a plastic bag inside the return shipping box. I will provide tracking information so you know when it will be delivered to you.
